The process is specifically for people who currently have Duo setup with the University and need to migrate to Microsoft Authenticator.
If you have any questions or experience any issues while following this process:
Before beginning the setup process, you will need two devices:
- A computer where you can walk through the setup steps
- The phone or tablet where you'll install the Microsoft Authenticator app
To setup your account and device for Microsoft MFA:
- Install Microsoft Authenticator on your phone or tablet:
- Go to https://scranton.edu/mfadownload.
- Your browser should open your phone's app store - if it prompts you to switch apps, tap yes.
- Install the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Setup your account for Microsoft MFA:
- In the web browser on your computer, navigate to https://scranton.edu/mfasetup.
- If you are not already logged in, you will be prompted to enter your email address and password.
- If this is the first time you are setting up Microsoft MFA and you have previously setup Duo, you may be prompted to verify your login with Duo.
- On the Security info page, click Add sign-in method.

- On the Add a sign-in method screen, click Microsoft Authenticator.

- Click Next.

- Click Next.

- A QR code will be displayed.

- On your phone or tablet, open the Microsoft Authenticator app that you previously installed.
- If you are prompted at any point to allow the Authenticator app to access the camera, tap Allow.
- If this is the first time you've opened the app, you may see this screen. If so, tap Skip.

- On the main screen of the app, tap the + button in the upper-right corner or click Add account, then tap Work or school account.


- Tap Scan QR code.

- Using your phone, scan the QR code that's displayed on the computer screen.

- If you are prompted to allow the Authenticator app to send notifications, tap Allow.
- On the computer, click Next.
- The computer will display a number for you to enter into the app on your phone. Enter the number and tap Yes.


- On the computer, click Next.

Your Microsoft MFA setup is complete! Within the next ten minutes, your registration will be pushed to all of our systems and then, the next time you login, you'll be prompted for Microsoft MFA instead of Duo.
Within a few hours of setting up Microsoft MFA, you may be prompted to login to all of your apps (i.e. Outlook, Teams, etc.) on all of your devices. This is a security precaution.
Setup SMS Text Messages as a Backup
It's a good idea to setup text messages as a backup authentication method, in the event that your Authenticator app becomes unavailable (i.e. you changed phones).

If you previously used Duo for your University account:
- Do not remove Duo from your phone at this time, as it may still be used for certain apps until the completion of our migration to Microsoft MFA.
- For a short period after you setup Microsoft MFA, you may still see the Duo prompt when logging in to My.Scranton. This is expected behavior and your Microsoft MFA will become active shortly.
- If you're still seeing the Duo prompt after two hours, please contact the Technology Support Center.
