If you have questions or experience any issues while following this process:
The Microsoft Authenticator app is the preferred method for logging into University resources because of its extra security features. However, SMS text messages can be added to your account as a backup. Generally, you should only use text message authentication when you replace your phone (with the same phone number) or need to re-enroll your existing phone in Authenticator.
To setup SMS text messages for Microsoft MFA:
- In the web browser on your computer, navigate to https://scranton.edu/mfasetup.
- If you are not already logged in, you will be prompted to enter your email address and password and then accept a Microsoft Authenticator push.
- On the Security info page, click Add sign-in method.

- On the Add a sign-in method screen, click Phone.

- Enter your phone number and click Next.

- You will receive a text message with a six digit code. Enter this code and click Next.

- Click Done.

Now that you have SMS text messages setup as a backup, if your Authenticator isn't working when you try to login:
- When prompted to enter the number into your Authenticator app, click I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.

- Click Text.

- Enter the code that was texted to you and click Verify.

As soon as possible, you should re-enroll your phone for Microsoft Authenticator, as this is the quickest and most secure method to sign in. You can follow the instructions, starting at step 2, in the Migrate from Duo to Microsoft MFA knowledge base article to re-enroll your phone.
